At a recent Headteachers Roundtable Summit, Stephen Tierney, a multi-academy (MAT) trust executive has suggested that a specialist body of safeguarding officers should be set up within or separately from Ofsted because current school inspections are too short to cover the issue properly.
Safeguarding is clearly an area of concern for many Head teachers as he went on to say that safeguarding pupils was too important to be assessed as part of wider inspections every few years. He recommended that a special team of chartered safeguarding experts should be making school visits every term, with a follow-up the next term.
What is safeguarding?
Safeguarding is defined in Ofsted guidance as protecting children from any “maltreatment” or negative effects on their “health or development”.
It includes “ensuring that children are growing up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care” and “taking action to enable all children to have the best outcomes”.
The guidance said schools may need to protect pupils from issues including physical, sexual and emotional abuse, as well as bullying, domestic violence, and substance misuse. Ofsted has previously placed schools in special measures over these failings, regardless of their academic performance.
How can your school phone system help you achieve better safeguarding?
One of the areas which can assist is the school phone system. Implementing call recording will ensure that the school has access to every inbound and outbound phone call. Every call is recorded and stored confidentially with only a selected number of the school leadership team having access.
Call recording is simple to use and can help with everything from resolving disputes, addressing safeguarding concerns to tackling pupil absenteeism. This addresses safeguarding concerns in between Ofsted visits and also keeps the parents on side combined with increasing school operational efficiency. Call recording comes as a FREE upgrade with many of our phone systems.
