Hacking is constantly in the news. With Christmas fast approaching, we are mindful that businesses will be closed for longer periods and this can be a time when phone hackers strike. We wanted to make our customers aware of the risk. Phone hacking can have devastating effects on your business, not just over Christmas but the effects can be potentially in the longer term too.

Security of any telephone system or computer system is a balance between ease of use and protecting the system. Typically, the easier to access and use, the less secure a phone system could be. At this time of year, security is not always top of mind.

The result of this is that the devices and services can often easily be hacked. If you want high security, expect to have some inconvenience. Research has shown that the most common PIN numbers are “1234” and “0000”. Beware using personal information too like date of birth as this can be known or easy to guess.

Phone hacking measures

There are measures at hand to try and prevent the hacker’s success:

• Change your voicemail pin number and do not make it a common, simple one like 1234, 4321, 2244 or other repetitive digits

• Make your voicemail pin number longer as most systems will accept 8 digit numbers and some as many at 15.

• On a lot of phone systems, the pin number is only there for remote access to your voicemail. If you do not need the feature, then do not have a pin number or at least have a very long one.

• If you do not need to dial premium rate numbers e.g. 0906xxx etc., ask the support team (via support@icscomms.co.uk) if it is possible to bar these numbers so the phone system cannot dial them.

• Please Note you will need to check Hunt Group voicemail as well, to see if they have a similar pin number or callback access feature.
